Handicaps
Hi ladies,
For those of you who maintain a handicap
either through GHIN or the EWGA system, March 1, 2010 is the official start of the golf season here in Oregon.
You should post scores for any rounds played on or after March 1st. Also, remember to post any scores that you
may have played in the winter in a sunbelt state where the official golf season is year round.
The first revision
date, i.e. the first day of the season when a new handicap will be calculated for you, is March 1, 2010. Two points to highlight: - Renewing GHIN handicap participants usually renew each year at the start of the season, but you can
renew at any time.
- GN21 (formerly GLMS) handicap
participants can play (and record their score) on any course with a slope and rating.
Feel free to contact
me if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions? What is a handicap?
A handicap is an indication of a player’s ability. It is a number that represents your skill level
and potential scoring ability. A complex formula is used to compute handicaps factoring in a player’s
score and difficulty of the course played.
Why do I need a handicap?
The benefits of having a handicap are: - Handicaps
are a gauge of a golfer’s skill level.
- Handicaps allow
a player to compete on a level playing field with players at other levels.
- They
provide a barometer of a golfer’s progress or improvement over time.
- They
become a personal badge of accomplishment.
- Handicaps are established
using scores from 9-hole or 18-hole play.
- They allow players
at all levels to compete in the EWGA Tournament.
- Handicaps
travel with you. If you play a course that is more difficult than your home course, your handicap will
be higher for that course. On an easier course, your handicap will lower for that course.
When should I get a handicap?
Once you start playing 9 or
18-hole rounds, you should establish your handicap. You will need to post scores from five 18-hole or ten
9-holes rounds of golf to get your first handicap after you have obtained a handicap number from the GN21 or GHIN.
If you have any further
questions about your handicap or how to establish a handicap, feel free to contact Handicap Chair, Linda Morrell at handicap@salemewga.org, or visit www.oga.org.
